Conquering the Aussie 10: Our Epic Journey Begins – Part 1
Exploring Rams Head, Rams Head North, and Australia’s Highest Peak, Mount Kosciuszko
The land down under is known for many things – stunning beaches, unique wildlife, and a rugged, untouched wilderness that calls out to adventurers. But there’s one challenge that stands tall above the rest, quite literally – the Aussie 10. These are the ten highest peaks in Australia, scattered amidst the awe-inspiring landscape of the Great Dividing Range within the Kosciuszko National Park. All the training we’ve been doing for the last few months has been leading up to our Climate Expedition in the snowy Australian Alps. Watch Part 1 of the epic 4 day Expedition below.
Brisbane to Canberra:
Our adventure began with a flight down to Canberra, where we eagerly met up with Leighton, the mastermind behind this epic expedition. As we gathered our gear and prepped our spirits for what lay ahead, the anticipation was palpable. We were about to embark on an unforgettable journey through some of the most picturesque and demanding terrain on the continent.
Day 1: Our First Challenge hiking up the slope at Dead Horse Gap
Our first day on this ambitious quest saw us conquering not one, but three of these majestic peaks (with 4 planned, but had to adjust). Rams Head, Rams Head North, and Mount Kosciuszko – an incredible feat for a single day. As we set off towards Rams Head, the air was electric with excitement. The rugged beauty of the Australian Alps was unlike anything we had ever seen before.
Rams Head North – Where Adventure Beckons
Rams Head North beckoned, and we eagerly answered its call. The trail meandered through snowy plains, a stark contrast to the sub-tropical terrain we are used to. With each step, we grew more in tune with nature, feeling the pulse of the wilderness all around us. It became a race against time to reach our last peak of the day, Mount Kosciusko before the sun set.
The Pinnacle – Mount Kosciuszko
But our ultimate goal for the day was none other than the pinnacle of this journey, Mount Kosciuszko, standing tall as the highest peak among the Aussie 10. We reached its summit just before the sun began its descent below the horizon. The view from the top was nothing short of breathtaking – a sea of peaks and valleys bathed in the soft hues of twilight.
The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. We had conquered Rams Head, Rams Head North, and Mount Kosciuszko, all in a single day. As we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and pink, we couldn’t help but reflect on the sheer beauty and resilience of the natural world.
Day 1 Peaks Achieved:
Peak 1: Rams Head – height 2190km
Peak 2: Rams Head North – height 2177km
